Before i use openwrt v22.03.6, i tried to use v23.05.2 but i couldn't find my wifi driver, Intel 3945 Golan wifi. And up to version 22.03.6 it is packed with the name kmod-iwl3945 but i heard that the new name for this driver has been changed to kmod-iwlegacy on new kernel.
So is openwrt still going to support it or dump it on the next release version? Or perhaps someone can help with that driver?
Unfortunately, browsing current development sources, e.g.
again I could not find any support for legacy / iwl3945 any more.
Irritating:
In their Release Notes, OpenWRT proudly announces newly supported devices,
but seemingly gives no hint about abandoning devices,
leaving the user to detect that by surprise.
To me, BKPepe's comment "somewhere else" felt neither welcoming nor helpful nor interested.
My overall impression: At the moment, Linux WiFi development concentrates on MT -
understandably, because seemingly they care about "open source" most.
Thus, needing to get a project up and running, I decided to compromise and get myself a current GL.iNet Wifi router, being based upon MT and OpenWrt 23.05.2 .
Yes, i already aware of that. But as i already know so far Linux kernel up to v6.1 is still supporting old devices, debian is also still supporting this iwlegacy & iwl-3945 up to now. I wonder why openwrt is taking its first step ahead to dump these driver. Thats annoying. Btw, what is mt?
The benefits of Open Source:
Everybody is enabled to take the available sources and compile / build modules to her demands; even more: is invited to get involved into projects, like via maintaining older modules.
But also, for sure, every developer decides for herself where she is spending her own free time into considering being worthwhile.
"up to v6.1" : and further; enjoying Gentoo, I'm running current stable = 6.7.9.
Oo... Yes mediatek. But mediatek they tend to get hot easily, that what i know so far. Gentoo is also good, ok i will consider it and test it sometime.
I ever thought of building it on my own just to get that legacy & 3945 but i don't have spared hd. I have to prepare a computer with large storage first. So i can't do it for now
Thank you very much for pointing out Felix' big cleanup in "v23.05.0-rc1" from Nov 9, 2022!
So this liberation strike took place exactly in preparation for "23.05"
and definitely clarifies what not to expect any longer.
Understandable - nobody wants to "ride a dead horse" if not absolutely vital.
Nevertheless, a hint in the release notes would have been helpful -
not only praising "Many new devices added",
but also honestly disclosing "Old devices abandoned" the same way.
