OK - just updated to 21.02 - and first few reboots, and nftables are coming up reliably.

Oh yes - should also says whats needed for 21.02. When 19.07 came round I updated: nftables documentation to try and distil it down to the minimum changes needed to openwrt to get nftables to work. Anyway this time I followed the same instructions - and that was enough to get it working. So the documentation to my mind is still good. If anyone has any comments though do say.
As regards firewall in 21.02 - its clearly still iptables based, the iptable command (version 1.8.7) is still set up as the legacy version. So can't see this changing at any stage of 21.02. There does seem to be more working going on fw4, which replaces fw3/fw with an nftables appoach - so maybe some chance think will change on the next major release.
