New installation on Zyxel NBG6716

Hi there,

I'm about to embark on a new installation of OpenWRT on my ancient Zyxel NBG6716. I've read the device page and entries in this forum. Some information seems to be outdated and different (outdated?) instructions are given by users on this forum. I want to make sure I apply the correct method.

  • The old wiki page mentions the option to go from a stock Zyxel firmware to the OpenWRT v15 via SSH and wget.
  • The new wiki page mentions the same, but refers to a v19 image.

Before bricking my precious device, can you guys share the instructions which worked for you?

Later on I want to start using the thing as a repeater of an existing Wifi setup.

FYI, the Device page refers to v19. But the latest firmware mentioned on the Device Inventory is actually v24.

new wiki page was written when 19 was "new".

you can start by installing v19, then upgrade to 24.

I managed to ssh in to the Zyxel (the instructions on the wiki are incorrect) do a wget of the v19 firmware write the image as per the instructions. Rebooted and was able to logon via WebGUI and ssh.

I then tried the same with the v24 image based on the URL of the latest firmware in the device lookup list.
When writing the image if throws an error stating: [e]Failed to get erase block status.

When trying to write the initial succesful v19 firmware binary again, I get the same error.

Is the device bricked? I did not yet reboot and can sitll use the GUI and SSH.
