I used TFTP flash, this https://kb.netgear.com/000059634/How-to-upload-firmware-to-a-NETGEAR-router-using-Windows-TFTP but on Linux.
It would be a nice test to attempt OpenWRT flash from original factory. This i didn't test. I didn't bother booting Netgear FW first, just jumped immediately into factory flash mode :slight_smile:

Perfect, Ill boot it from netgear FW and try to flash openwrt.

One first thing that I have noticed is the WAN interface LED is not powered up when Internet connectivity is established and have the following lines that are spamming the System log:
Wireless performance is very good out of the box (only security configured)

I can confirm that flashing openwrt img from newest factory firmware works fine!

Proceeding to test radios as my unit may have defective 2.4 WiFi.

Yeah. I dont plan to use 2.4G, too crowded. I use this device only as learning platform and getting more into openwrt.

In the meantime I see that you have more devices detected, did you add (and commited to your branch?) some new things recently?

No, nothing new. The last thing i worked on was the crypto driver. I still need to implement AEAD mode, oddly, the DDWRT fw removed support for AEAD from the crypto driver but the original one from Netgear has it enabled.

I have been running the egorenar build on my R9000, with the most recent one being based on r17026+40-277248b293. It's been running pretty smoothly thus far - my only complaint was just that the switch/VLAN settings seem crazy... but I figured it out eventually.

Just out of curiosity - what kind of speeds are you guys getting? I've got basically a Gigabit connection (968 Mbps provisioned speeds), and it's basically like ... hard-wired, I can get very near that speed (930-950) but wireless I seem to be maxing out near 500 Mbps (80 Mhz, channel 149).

Default VLAN settings should work w/o any changes.

It's normal that WLAN is much less than Ethernet, it has a lot of overhead and interference in comparison to Ethernet, it won't ever be close to it.

Is R9000 hardware capable to run something like pi-hole?

There's adblock in openwrt, people don't usually put piholes on their routers.

  • synology rt2600ac (nsupp / prev-gen)
  • a few ubiquiti/tplink which are on the lower end of beefy or not so fully featured or easiliy flashable

i'm half way through my current AP life cycle and the cost is prohibitive otherwise i'd pick one up...

( $500AU / ~350US is a tad on the high end tho' )

Hello! I finally received my R9000 and installed openwrt on it - works great!
A few questions:

  • How do I control the fans? I see that it has an i2c fan controller - anything else I can get out of it?
  • How do I use the onboard Bluetooth? My unit still has the bluetooth circuit near the A4 antenna connector.
  • I can't seem to get any LED other than power to work
