Netgear R6850: very low transmit power on 5GHz

Hello!

I have been using snapshot installations of Openwrt on my Netgear R6850 for a while (currently: r16160-da339a6d3f). It mostly works fine with 2,4Ghz (transmit power: 20dBm), but with 5Ghz the transmit power maximum is 6dBm, which means that devices connect to another AP at a greater distance. Changing country setting does not affect the transmit power. Any ideas of how to fix this? So far, only two things have crossed my path when searching for answers, and I need advice on this, or other ideas:

  • It seems some users have success installing the firmware for R6350 on the R6850. Could this help?
  • I found a thread on another device in which a similar problem occurs, and it i said there that is an eeprom issue. Is this anything that a normal user may correct without causing disaster, and in that case: how? (https://github.com/openwrt/mt76/issues/376)

I greatly appreciate any help with this:)

Here is a paste from the relevant part of the output of iw list:

Anything in logread right after boot? Could you share it? Did you try populating the EEPROM manually as suggested in the bug report you linked to?

When it comes to populating the eeprom ... I have no idea how to do that... Any hints?

Here is the output from logread (I am not sure exactly what to look for):

I'm going out on a limb here, but that data seems to be extracted from flash at boot time. It's expected at a certain location that is predefined in your device's DTS. I have an R6800 (all MT7615 wireless) and EEPROM is read into /sys (a virtual filsesystem):

# find / -name "*mtd-eeprom*"
/sys/firmware/devicetree/base/pcie@1e140000/pcie@0,0/wifi@0,0/mediatek,mtd-eeprom
/sys/firmware/devicetree/base/pcie@1e140000/pcie@1,0/wifi@0,0/mediatek,mtd-eeprom

I don't know if you could try overwriting any of those files would work, but it's worth a try - I think you need the phy0/pcie@0,0 ones since it's your first radio from what I can see (log says 0000:01:00:0 for mt7615e and 0000:01:00:0 for the MT7603 radio).

Your device is indeed very similar to the R6350 and R6260, they all share the DTS with your R6850 though so while you could try those images, it probably wouldn't make a difference.

The DTS points to the factory partition, looks like that is mtd5 (counting starts at 0):

Thu Mar 11 19:38:50 2021 kern.notice kernel: [    2.336284] 7 fixed-partitions partitions found on MTD device mt7621-nand

And your DTS says this:

&pcie0 {
       wifi@0,0 {
               compatible = "mediatek,mt76";
               reg = <0x0 0 0 0 0>;
               mediatek,mtd-eeprom = <&factory 0x8000>;
               ieee80211-freq-limit = <5000000 6000000>;
       };
};

So either the offset's wrong (factory is the right partition) or there's something else going on. Was transmit power for the 5 GHz radio OK at any point for you on OpenWrt? Or has it always been low?

I have no idea how EEPROM data is supposed to look, so I can't help you with that. For my R6800 the 5 GHz radio has its EEPROM data sitting at 0x8000 as well and mine's working. I ran hexdump on an mtd5 dump here (factory partition is mtd5 as well) and it shows this:

$ hexdump -C mtd5 |grep 0008000
00008000  15 76 a0 00 8c 3b ad ef  ef 5d 15 76 c3 14 00 80  |.v...;...].v....|

Left is the address and I think the two blocks after that are the radio type (15 76, ie MT7615). You copy the contents of your partition like this so you can safely manipulate it:

$ ssh root@$router_ip "cat /dev/mtd5" > mtd5

You'll get an 'mtd5' blob in your working dir then on which you can run hexdump etc.

Thanks a lot for this! To your question: Yes, the 5Ghz radio has been limited to 6 dBm all the time in Openwrt.

When i look at the contents of mtd5 with hexdump, it seems the 5Ghz info is not at 00008000 if I read the output correctly. It seems to reside in 00028000, with its "15 76 ...", right?

I guess I could try to correct the location (00028000) in DTS, although I have to admit my competence is somewhat limited here. How can I edit the DTS without bricking the device..?

You need to recompile. Can you do that?

If yes adapt the DTS with this patch:

Thanks for the swift reply :slight_smile: I have never recompiled openwrt (only debian on x86), but I will certainly try. However, perhaps the patch could also correct the reference to 2,4Ghz? It seems to be located at 00020000 (according to the hexdump above). Anyhow, I will read up on openwrt compilation and try recompiling with a patch.

Yes I see, I have a buildroot up anyway for MT7621. I'll whip up an image for you.

Nice! Should I submit a bug somewhere for correcting the location of eeprom data for future R6850-builds?

I'll send in a patch with your tested-by if this works. If it does, though, the question will be whether the other devices using this shared DTS have their EEPROM data at the same (wrong) location or not.

@bthorval Can you give this a shot?

https://volatilesystems.org/dl/lede/targets/r6850/

If it does, please give me your e-mail address (you can PM it if you'd like) so I can include it as tested-by in the patch.

The build works well, transmission power is now 20 dBm for both radios. I hope the location of the wifi-radio-data is the same on all other Netgear R6850 routers and that it does not vary according to revisions of the device... Thanks, Borromini, for your help :slight_smile:

Happy to help!

There's been a bit of back and forth on the R6850 and related devices, looking at the git commit. Commit 4716c843d6 fixed the R6260 offsets e.g. but got reverted later on. Let's hope the R6850 doesn't use different partition layouts either within the same revision.

@bthorval I was asked to revise the patch, could you test my new image? Should work all the same but want to be sure before I send it in. New image up at the same URL.

Thanks!

Sure. :slightly_smiling_face: But tomorrow, since I am at a party right now.

FYI
I have a Netgear R6850 (AC 2000)
I use the opwnrt image for R6350

# hexdump -C /dev/mtd5 |grep 00008000
gives:
00008000 15 76 11 00 14 59 c0 cf f8 7b 15 76 c3 14 00 80 |.v...Y...{.v....|

# hexdump -C /dev/mtd5 |grep 00028000

does not return anything

iw list
shows me >20dB.

Lovely. That means there's two varieties, just like with the R6260 apparently.

Edit: there's two partition parser patches (1, 2) sitting in Patchwork. Apparently the different offsets might be caused by bad blocks on the NAND.

Hi! I flashed the new firmware from your URL ( r16186+14-bf4aa0c6a2 ), and I can confirm that the wireless radio is up with 20dBm transmit power, both 2.4 and 5Ghz :slight_smile: This build works well on my router. It seems incredible impractical, however, that the eeprom data resides on different locations on different versions of the R6850. Anyway, thanks for the build :slight_smile:

@bthorval Can you try my second build with the Sercomm parser patches? It's in a separate subdir, same link. That has the offset at the old locations, but uses the built-in partition table the devices come with.
