NetGear r6800 failsafe mode /dev/root full

Dear Community,

I got a Netgear r6800 with 24.0.x installed ; I did update it with attended sysupgrade from 24.0.2 to 24.0.4 a while ago and everything was working. It’s not anymore.

Thanks to de documentation I could have it booted in failsafe mode. I check it with the df -h command, and the roofs appear to be full. So, according to the page, I did try to erase it with

mtd -r erase rootfs_data

I got the following message “Could not open mtd device: rootfs_data”

I probably lack of some linux knowledge to fix this.

  • So what could I do to go further ?
  • According to the Hardware page wiki, it’s stated that the “Current supported rel” is “24.0.2”. Should I downgrade to that version ? And how ?

Thanks in advance for your reply, and your help, regards.

Matt

You mean something like this?
/dev/root 14.8M 14.8M 0 100% /rom

If yes, then

is absolutely unnecessary because it's perfectly normal.

You have to be explicit about "rootfs" (which is squashfs backed and always 100% full by definition) and "rootfs_data", or more accurately the overlay (which should never go below ~320 KB free, but may).

You device seems to give you ~40 MB for rootfs+overlay, which shouldn't be a problem for a router.

Do not use low-level tools, unless you really-really-really know what you're doing, there's firstboot to handle factory resets.

Apart from that most likely stating 24.10.2, you have to keep in mind that the device pages are manually curated, so the listing will pretty much always be behind - you should obviously not downgrade to 24.10.2, but use the most current stable release, which would be 24.10.4 at the moment.

Thank you both for your fast replies !

The worry i got is that i’m not able to perform a firstboot to reset the modem cause apparently i need to mount the file system to do so : when i try to do it I got, after the warning about erasing the settings, the following message :”

/dev/ubi0_1 is not mounted

/dev/ubi0_1 will be erased on net mount

So i tried, without success, apparently luckily without success, to erase it

Tipp: If you are not able to use mount_root and you get the message jffs2 not ready yet, using temporary tmpfs overlay . Please check your filesystem with df -h and when it is full (used 100%) the mount_root command isn't working well and also a soft factory reset isn't working. In this case use

So I’m not too sure about what to do next. Thanks for your help!

ubiattach, then mount root.
