Netgear Orbi RBR50 and RBS50 backhaul

Hi,
I have a Netgear Orbi RBR50 and RBS50 (The V1 versions). I was wondering if anyone has used OpenWRT on them and if there is any information on configuring the backhaul. I'm hoping to set them up in AP mode and use VLAN trunking to have a dedicated guest network, as opposed to the primary wireless network and guest network sharing the same subnet. Both my router/firewall and network switch support VLAN trunking.

Thanks for your time,
Sam

That is correct approach, you set a "guest wifi" on the internet connected router, and add br-lan.100 vlan that is tagged on the interconnect port. Repeat in the other end, your main non-virtual management LAN (without v) will stay up through all the game.

  • make a guest VLAN, gide says make a new bridge - NO - make a vlan on br-lan
  • (optionally) dawn or usteer to bounce clients to best AP

Will one of these units be your main router, or do you have another device for that?

I'd recommend starting by setting up the guest wifi network on the primary router. While this one does not connect the guest network to ethernet (it will be wifi only), this will get your second network up and running. Then, it only takes a few minor modifications to get it configured with VLANs to trunk over to the other device (an AP-only unit), and then we can get that running with the VLANs quite easily.

Just setup one device at a time, though, to avoid confusion and/or propagation of errors that need to be corrected in multiple places.
