Need help troubleshooting 5GHz radio crash on high bandwidth downloads with Zyxel NBG6817 on 21.02

Hi friends,

I have a consistent issue with the 5gz radio on my Zyxel NBG6817 Wi-Fi on 21.02 where if I initiate any high bandwidth download on the 5ghz interface, after a while, the interface crashes completely, ceasing to advertise it's SSID and dropping all connections. After which the radio appears in Lucy as the following:

Qualcomm Atheros QCA9984 802.11nac
Channel: 36 (5.180 GHz) | Bitrate: ? Mbit/s

The only remedy for this issue is to initiate a reboot. Attempting to restart just the radio interface does not bring the radio back online. The radio remains stable under all other conditions except when downloading games via Steam or other sources.

Any wisdom the community can provide me on issues like this would be greatly appreciated!

On the 5 Ghz radio, I would suggest a higher channel.

Run iwinfo wlan0 scan | grep Channel and see which channel has the least usage.

I use 153.

I would try changing the channel width from 80 to 40...if no improvement, change it to 20.

For 2.4 Ghz, I would pick channel 1, 6, or 11.

Run iwinfo wlan1 scan | grep Channel and see which of the three has less usage.

I live rather close to an international airport, and in an apartment complex so finding the right channel for solid connections has been a challenge. Here are my results.

Try 153 for 5 Ghz, set your channel width to 40, and test the condition.

@slh owns this router I believe, and may have other suggestions.

The router completely refused to use channel 153 under the country code for US, and reverts to channel 149, however when I changed the country code to 'driver default' it started using it, but crashing almost immediately.

Switched back to country code US and it reverted to channel 60... I'm not sure why the 5g radio is being so problematic.

Channel 153 finally worked after changing the channel width to 20hz, however quickly crashed under load.

Channels 52-144 are DFS (radar) channels, so it's odd that it reverted to 60.

Try 149, 157, and 161.

What is Maximum Transmit Power set to?

Driver default

Try manually setting it to 20 and re-test with 149, 157, and 161.

Channel width at 20, then 40.

Also, when you get a chance, run iwinfo and post the results.

I'm interested in the SNR on your 5 Ghz connections.

Setting the maximum transmit power to 20 seemed to really do the trick! No more crashing. I'll report back with more details soon.

ESSID "Orange" signal strength of 49 dBm is good (OpenWRT calls it SNR, but SNR is typically measured in dB).

Did you have this problem before 21.02.0?

I think this was persistent, yes. The transmit power was always set to Driver default, which was reporting at 23db.

Keep an eye on channel usage in your area, and your signal strength.

Conditions during peak usage hours may change things.
