NanoPi R4S - Can't install 24.10.1

Hi and thanks in advance.

I'm having trouble installing 24.10.1 on my R4S. I get a good SD card burn and then insert the card into the device and my LAN never comes up.

I can get this to work perfectly: https://github.com/anaelorlinski/OpenWrt-NanoPi-R2S-R4S-Builds/releases?q=OpenWrtAO-24.10&expanded=true

... but for some reason the vanilla build just doesn't want to install properly.

Note, I had 23.05 installed and working correctly.

Any thoughts?

This is, apparently, a currently standing and hard to resolve bug.

Thanks. Boy it would have been nice to have that flagged on the openwrt download page. I spent my whole afternoon messing around trying to get this to work.

I guess I'm okay using the GitHub version for now. I do worry about security with these community based builds.

Do you have a sense of how people are working around this bug?

Not sure about the logistics of listing all open issues for all devices on the download page, at least in its current form. But yes, the device page could probably stand to benefit from a hint.

Sorry, I couldn't say, I don't own the device myself. I am only aware of your your issue because we have a resident, rather cantankerous user with the same problem.

I have two R4S units. One of the units (#1) is showing exactly this problem - 24.10.1 boots but LAN port does not come up. Same case as reported by OP, build 23.05.5 works fine. My 24.10.1 build with PR to fix this resolves the issue, LAN port is enabled. OK.

Interestingly enough, this #1 unit, when using a build that works, does not have the "hang on reboot issue". Reboot works just fine, every time.

My second R4S unit (#2) boots with all builds (including the vanilla official 24.10.1), but this unit does have the "hang on reboot problem", and the PR to fix this does not work.

The only difference between the two units is that unit #1 has the EPROM chip with the hardware MAC address. More details here.

So I believe that this issue of LAN port not coming up with 24.10.1 might be somehow related to the hang on reboot problem.
