My experience with D-Link DWM-222 A2

Hi.

I wanted a LTE modem for my router. I ordered a DWM-222 and hoped for the best. My dongle is hardware A2 revision with 4.0.0EUb01 firmware pre-installed. I installed the required packages for QMI interface and usb-modeswitch, plugged the dongle in, and I had 4 ttyUSBs for GSM, one virtual CD-ROM for drivers (doesn’t matter), one SD interface for microSDs up to 32GB and the cdc-wdm0 QMI interface. Set the APN and now I have a fully functional LTE connection. I really like it.

Curious, I could not find a firmware version 4.0.0EUb01 for this device on the official servers, did they switch to OTA updates for this device?

I remember I had upgraded mine some time ago to a firmware which would no longer use QMI, but enumerate as an USB Ethernet device instead, providing DHCP and a web interface (like a portable “mifi” router, just without wifi and battery). This usually worked better than QMI in some setups, since the wwan management would be handled locally by the device. Curious to see they still support the native QMI approach though.
