What's the/a package containing an mta on openwrt? I saw msmtpq-ng-mta but I can't seem to find it in the repository
Just search for msmtp. There are ssl, nossl, queue and mta-only versions to choose from depending on your needs.

I got it just after posting the message. Opkg find and search weren't returning anything but I got it working after an opkg update.
I've installed msmtp.
