MT7921AU on OpenWRT: Stuck at 3 dBm TX Power and 20 MHz Width on 5 GHz AP

Hi everyone,

I'm using a MediaTek MT7921AU USB Wi-Fi adapter with OpenWRT on a Raspberry Pi 4. It's configured to run as a 5 GHz Access Point, but I’m facing the following issues:

  • TX power is stuck at 3 dBm despite being set higher in config
  • Channel width is locked at 20 MHz, even though htmode is HE80
  • The client is connecting with HE-MCS and 2 spatial streams, but throughput is limited

:red_exclamation_mark: What I Need Help With:

  • Why is channel width stuck at 20 MHz instead of 80 MHz?
  • Why is TX power limited to 3 dBm, even though I set it to 17?
  • The adapter supports 2x2 MIMO with HE-MCS 0–11 — is something limiting its full AP capability?
  • Is this a driver or firmware limitation of the MT7921AU (mt7921u) under OpenWRT?

Actually, no. I have planned to upgrade to 24.10.1 at the end of this month.

There was a VHT NSS issue on 23.05.4, which was fixed with 23.05.5.

Although it was still being reported up to November last year on 23.05.5

@brada4 confirmed on the above issue that it's a documented mobile power saving feature, although it is no longer reported as most people have upgraded to 24.10, issue is still open though.

So while the issue is valid, with 23.05 due to be end of life within three months, it may be worth upgrading to 23.05-SNAPSHOT to see if it is fixed on the 23.05 release or just move to 24.10 sooner.

I also have the same problem with my laptop and, if you surf the web, you find a lot of posts and people complaining with this kind of wireless chip.

7921e is a PCIe-based module, while 7921au is a USB-based module designed for external Wi-Fi adapters. That’s exactly why I raised the issue—because they use different interfaces and drivers (mt7921e vs mt7921u). I had already gone through that thread earlier, but thanks for pointing it out!

Just upgraded to OpenWRT 24.10.1 on my setup. A few updates and issues to share:

:white_check_mark: Channel issue is now resolved — I can now select channel 80 for 5GHz without problems. Also VHT NSS issue is now resolved.

:new_button: New Problem (WiFi Disappearing):

  • I use the same SSID for both 2.4GHz (Atheros 9k) and 5GHz (MediaTek MT7921).
  • After booting, both bands come up initially.
  • After about 90 seconds, the 2.4GHz SSID disappears from all devices — no errors in logs, it just vanishes.
  • First, I changed SSID to two different names but 2.4GHz still disappears.
  • I tried disabling the 5GHz radio — no change; 2.4GHz still disappears.
  • Then, I physically unplugged the 5GHz adapter, and 2.4GHz started working without issues.

I did experienced the same with: https://github.com/morrownr/USB-WiFi/blob/main/home/USB_WiFi_Adapters_that_are_supported_with_Linux_in-kernel_drivers.md#axe3000---usb30---24-ghz-5-ghz-and-6-ghz-wifi-6e.
It was 3-4 weeks ago when I was playing with this dongle, but what I remember is that changing the country fixed the issue. I do not recommend doing that, as it is illegal, but you can try it, to see if it is a bug.
However, I was reading somewhere that it is a bug and actually it do not affect the transmit power ( and actually it transmits to the highest possible), although you actually can not control it.
I am waiting for my USB powered hub and USB extender cable to continue the testing in 1-2 weeks and will post the result.
