Hello. How do you completely wipe this router and do a fresh install of openwrt? I think I may have messed it up. I installed a community build originally then after trying to enable some things one of my networks was gone. So I flashed multiple times the stock openwrt firmware but the 5ghz network is still not showing up. Any help would be great thanks in advance.
Careful, as there are two firmwares available. Factory is for the first installation, then you need to use the sysupgrade.
Restore to defaults can be achieved either from Luci, or by issuing the firstboot
in cli.
What does iw list; uci export wireless; iwinfo
say?
The r7800 "debricking" instructions using TFTP and a "factory" image are here.
I have a close cousin to the r7800, based on my own experience and the experience of others that have posted about the r7800 in these forums, these devices are very forgiving. A TFTP flash of a factory image should be a complete reset. It's unlikely you've lost your wifi due to flashing images.
That said, you shouldn't need this and just issuing firstboot
from the cli (as the user above suggested) should get you back to the starting point. It may help others who could help you to know the community build you've loaded as well as posting the output of the additional commands suggested above.
Lastly, this community build is popular (read safe, works well, and a good place to start) for the r7800. Read the first post to get started.
HTH
Thanks for the reply, not sure what cli is. Last night i tried multiple times with both firmware. How do I do it through Luci? I tried to revert back to OEM firmware, but no luck. I used netgears guide but didn't work.
Okay. I'm going to try TFTP flash, I just tried a little while ago with this guide (https://kb.netgear.com/000059633/How-do-I-upload-firmware-to-my-NETGEAR-router-using-a-TFTP-client-on-Microsoft-Windows) to revert back to OEM firmware but to no avail, I used Tftpd64. I couldn't get it to work. Not sure what cli is, gonna look it up now.
I was able to revert and reflash that community build. Sadly 5ghz network still isn’t showing.
Did you set the correct country code for the radios? What is the output of dmesg
and of logread
?
Have you tried resetting your settings to defaults values while continuing to run the OpenWRT build? Do that to rule out something you set. You should have both radios supported on that device.
cli stands for Command Line Interface. Meaning use a secure shell (ssh) client (putty seems to be popular on windows) to connect to your device from you computer and issue text commands at a prompt.
However, you can view the output of the cli commands dmesg
(kernel log) and logread
(system log) from Luci by going to the "Status" menu and choosing the "System log" item. Given your symptoms this is a good place to start looking. Please copy and post the kernel log and system log output.
When posting the output from your device on this forum, use the "Preformatted text </>
" button:
Remember to redact passwords, MAC addresses and any public IP addresses.
It likely will be much easier for you (and others trying to help you) to use the cli so you might want to work on that as well.
I restored. Here's what the second command says

I'm not sure why it's not formatting correctly I posted the results from the second command from the first comment on this post.
Try again to post the kernel log (the output of dmesg
from the cli).
Your output above indicates 2.4 GHz wifi only and confirms what you already know, your 5 GHz wifi is not functioning.
Here's what I got, also thanks for the help

It looks like there is either a problem with the board data file (this is fixable) or there is a problem reading the pre cal data from the "art" partition (potentially fatal for your 5 GHz wifi).
At this point, I think you'll need some help from one of the advanced R7800 users to figure out which might be the issue. Note, your wifi chipset reports as qca9984/qca9994 but I'm not familiar enough with your device to know if the the qca9994 part of that is normal and expected. Maybe you just have a unit with an upgraded wifi chipset?
Unless I'm mistaken, the pre cal data is unique to your specific unit (i.e. it's not something generic to R7800) and exists on the "art" partition. "Vanilla" openwrt does not modify the art partition. You may need to check that "community" build mentioned in your first post and see if it modify's this partition. AFAIK @hnyman's community build does not modify the art partition but I think all ath10k based routers read this data.
You can cat /proc/mtd
from the cli to view a list of partitions on your device.
HTH
That part is fine, software side qca9984 and qca9994 are the same, the later is just the enterprise variant (with extended temperature ranges, etc.).
Forgot to mention the commands I issued is for the standard OpenWRT, went back to that after flashing the community build. I'll report back with results from cat /proc/mtd.
Here's the results:
root@OpenWrt:~# cat /proc/mtd
dev: size erasesize name
mtd0: 00c80000 00020000 "qcadata"
mtd1: 00500000 00020000 "APPSBL"
mtd2: 00080000 00020000 "APPSBLENV"
mtd3: 00140000 00020000 "art"
mtd4: 00140000 00020000 "artbak"
mtd5: 00400000 00020000 "kernel"
mtd6: 06080000 00020000 "ubi"
mtd7: 00700000 00020000 "reserve"
To my knowledge, neither OEM, official OpenWrt nor my build does modify the art partition. It is locked as read-only. All firmwares flash just the kernel+rootfs (ubi) area.
You might check with hexdump, if the contents of art and artbak are identical. And does reading the art cause errors?
Is the radio missing both in the master, 22.03 and 21.02 OpenWrt versions? Have you tried the Netgear OEM firmware?
Not sure how to check hexdump or art. Yes the radio is missing in both OpenWRT versions and also Netgear OEM firmware.
I meant that you could use the hexdump tool to see the contents of art.
hexdump -C /dev/mtd3 | less
It starts ok, so the flash has not been zeroed, at least.
But the pre-calibration data should be a offsets 1000 and 5000, and you dump only shows the early part of the 1000 block. (Does it show more, if you leave the paging command "less" away?)
(Ps. I am not at my own R7800, so I can't verify how it should look.)
