I know I need "mesh point" in the output of "iw list", but I have not seen a database of sorts for which cards will do it.
Supported interface modes:
* ...
* ...
* mesh point <-- THIS ONE
* ...
* ...
Right now I only got MT7610U and MT7612U but these are quite old and slow for my needs. Anyone know of any useful resources? I want to use cheap-ish SBCs to make my own APs with known good, upgradable, supported software. Any help is appreciated.

mt76-any
ath9k
ath10k
ath11k (a bit buggy sometimes)
ath12k (lots of rough edges)
Most others advertise capability, but ymmv
Making sbc into wifi access point doubles price, better but mid-to-high range router based on filogic chips.

I'm currently interested in Wifi 6/6E/7 chipsets. If I understand this correctly, IBSS mode(which is supported by virtually all) plus batman+batman-adv or yggdrasil should work if all mesh nodes "sees" the gateway(no packet forwarding), but 802.11s is a lot more flexible so I'll focus on that.
From what I can gather:
MT7921 does not support mesh (https://github.com/openwrt/mt76/issues/653 )
MT7996E does not support mesh (https://github.com/openwrt/mt76/issues/961 , https://bpa.st/25NQ )
WCN7850 (QCNCM865) does not support mesh (https://forums.servethehome.com/index.php?threads/802-11be-the-cheap-way-40.42112/page-4 )
Others:
MT7915 supports mesh (https://github.com/dangowrt/owrt-ubi-installer/issues/27 )
MT7916 supports mesh (https://github.com/openwrt/openwrt/issues/17632 )
MT7603, MT7615 supports mesh (Installing OpenWrt on UniFi nanoHD - #43 by vultux )
Mt7603,MT7612 supports mesh (Hardware recommendations for mesh network (802.11s) )
AC/ath10k:
QCA9563, QCA9880, QCA9984, IPQ4018 supports mesh (OpenWrt 18.06.1: Unable to negotiate with [IP-address] port 22: no matching host key type found. Their offer: ssh-rsa - #16 by slh )
AC/marvell:
88W8864 probably does not work (Trouble getting batman-adv working - #30 by Markinus )
88W8964 does not work (https://github.com/kaloz/mwlwifi/issues/359 )
AC/Broadcom:
BCM4366B1, BCM4366C0 does not work (ASUS RT-AC88U/broadcom WDS )
(I'm going to just keep editing this list here)
