Mediatek MT7613E range issue on ZBT-WE3526

Hello I am using mt7613e chipset for my router. With latest snapshot of openwrt, I have managed to make the mt7613e chip up. I have used mt7615e, mt7615-firmware, mt7663-firmware-ap as well as mt7663-firmware-sta. But for 2.4Ghz range is very low. In station mode, if the AP is too closer (within 10cm) only it able to get connected to the AP. But 5Ghz performance is better than 2.4 Ghz.

dmesg logs are shared below

I am using an antenna as well..

Please mention your specific model, and use </> code tags (see edit bar on top of the post window).

test

The invalid MAC address error suggests the EEPROM isn't read out correctly. Can you also share the following:

# grep factory /proc/mtd

That will return your factory partition number (e.g. mtd5), on which you should then run hexdump (replace with the correct partition number):

# hexdump C /dev/mtd5

Please post both outputs (using code tags).

I am using a custom model (for a customer made by them) with reference as ZBT-WE3526.

grep factory /proc/mtd

mtd2: 00010000 00010000 "factory"

hexdump -C /dev/mtd2

OK so that means your MT7603 EEPROM (2,4 GHz radio) starts at 0x0000 and it looks like the MT7663 one starts at 0x8000. Your DTS seems to have these set correctly.

No idea what the override_addr is about though, maybe that makes it look at the wrong memory location?

P.S. You don't need the mt7615-firmware package, nor do you need the mt7663-firmware-sta. You only need mt7663-firmware-ap.

Yes. Dts entry is shown below

&pcie {
    status = "okay";
};

&pcie0 {
    wifi@0,0 {
        compatible = "pci14c3,7613";
//      reg = <0x0000 0 0 0 0>;
        mediatek,mtd-eeprom = <&factory 0x8000>;
        ieee80211-freq-limit = <5000000 6000000>;

        led {
            led-sources = <2>;
        };
    };
};

&pcie1 {
    wifi@0,0 {
        compatible = "pci14c3,7603";
//      reg = <0x0000 0 0 0 0>;
        mediatek,mtd-eeprom = <&factory 0x0000>;
    };
};

I am using mt7612e instead of mt7662 in ZBT-WE3526.

Rebuilt openwrt by disabling mt7615-firmware mt7663-firmware-sta. Observed some changes in the dmesg logs and is sharing below if that helps to get some clue.

dmesg | grep mt7615

[   14.539164] mt7615e 0000:02:00.0: override_addr = 0x00112c00, option = 3

With the above configuration mt7612e's 2.4Ghz performance is still poor.

Can you share your whole unfiltered dmesg?

I suppose trying a recent build won't make much of a difference, however mt76 did see a bump in the meantime (you're on 5.4.99 and master is now at 5.4.105). Mind trying that?

Sure will try out..

Tried with master branch (5.4.105) , but no difference. mt7612e's 2.4Ghz performance is poor, whereas 5Ghz performance is OK.

But for 2.4Ghz range is very low. In station mode, if the AP is too closer (within 10cm) only it able to get connected to the AP.

Check if your device is in physically good shape, maybe something unsoldered itself? Maybe antennas are broken? I'm getting pretty great range (entire 100sqm flat covered well on both bands).

But 5Ghz performance is better than 2.4 Ghz.

When testing using iperf3 I'm getting around 80-90mbps on 2,4GHz network and 300-380mbps on 5GHz. Same device as yours (ZBT WE3526), latest currently available stable build of OpenWrt (19.07.7).

tl;dr flash standard 19.07.7 image and check if your antennas ain't broken

I don't think MT7613 is supported on 19.07. It's rather recent hardware.

Official build of 19.07.7 for ZBT WE3526 can be downloaded here. Wi-Fi is of course supported (both 2,4GHz n and 5GHz ac radios).
