Luci reachable via WAN connection

Hello

I just did a fresh install on my router and noticed and noticed that my router is reachable via the the WAN connection on 172.26.15.68 .

This is kinda concerning because that’s a security risk because everyone on my network could try to change settings or hack into the router theoretically.

Is this normal behavior?

Are you testing from within the OpenWrt lan or are you doing this from upstream?

It is expected that you will be able to reach the router from inside your network -- this doesn't present a security risk.

If you are testing from upstream and you are able to connect, that is not normal (or at least not the default state), and we should look at that in more detail:

Please connect to your OpenWrt device using ssh and copy the output of the following commands and post it here using the "Preformatted text </> " button (red circle; this works best in the 'Markdown' composer view in the blue oval):

Remember to redact passwords, VPN keys, MAC addresses and any public IP addresses you may have:

ubus call system board
cat /etc/config/network
cat /etc/config/wireless
cat /etc/config/dhcp
cat /etc/config/firewall

BTW, this isn't a Public IP and isn't reachable from the Internet. As the other user mentioned, please verify you're testing from the WAN Zone/Interface when noting your results.

BTW, this isn't a Public IP and isn't reachable from the Internet

I am aware, it’s an address supplied by the gateway in my dorm. I am just surprised I can reach my router’s LuCI interface trough it and wonder if other people on the network can too.

But you didn't answer this question:

Yes Linux in general will answer for an IP. Doesn't matter if it's on an other interface.

So yes you can access the wan IP but only because you come from the lan network.

This tells the story right here -- your router is secure from the upstream:

input is set to REJECT which means that the upstream network cannot reach your router.

You must be testing from within your lan, and yes, it's expected and normal behavior for you to be able to reach the admin interfaces via the wan address of your router when accessing from within it's lan (where input = accept)/

From within the LAN for now. I am gonna ask some people if they can reach my router later

They won't be able to because your firewall prohibits it. (ping will succeed, though, but that's also expected).

Oh thanks, that explains it.

Then everything’s alright I guess
