Looking for support (or just advices) for Asus RP-AC66

printenv is sadly pretty much quiet:

ath> printenv
bootcmd=tftp
bootdelay=2
baudrate=115200
ethaddr=0x00:0xaa:0xbb:0xcc:0xdd:0xee
ipaddr=192.168.1.1
serverip=192.168.1.10
preferred_nic=eth1
stdin=serial
stdout=serial
stderr=serial
ethact=eth0

The only thing I can see from Uboot when booting is this:

mem_malloc_start/brk/end: 0x83f98000/83f98000/83fc8000

I'll share the mtd partitions later somehow :wink:

Well it looks like, the Art has only two MACs stored, both are for Wlans AND eth0 is taking the first address from these two, like visible in the original fw log:

So it looks like the eth MAC is set to garbage by u-boot. Later I can set it from 02_network actually to the same Art value as wlan24 MAC.
Right now I don't have a better solution :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks for the logs and mtd images. There's basically nothing in there, no device table, no environment variables, just uboot, a 3meg kernel image and the rootfs.

Maybe I don't understand mips well enough, but it looks like ASUS have done the absolute bare minimum to make the device boot. That suggests they haven't made many changes the reference implementation of the ap152 dev board, which was once a supported platform for Openwrt - up to v18.06. Looks like the ap152 was droppedd with the ar71xx target was retired.
18.06 doesn't have initramfs images, but there is a sysupgrade image available - it may boot far enough to see if the WLAN and Eth are correctly updated.
https://archive.openwrt.org/releases/18.06.9/targets/ar71xx/generic/openwrt-18.06.9-ar71xx-generic-ap152-16M-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin

Details of how ap152 was configured are in the 18.06 source. Not a dts as they weren't being used for mips then;

Line 121 to 156 show the setup and config of the network interfaces - setting the mac addresses and loading wlan caldata (which you're going to need).

Well, somehow I cannot get the ap152 build running, but nvm, I was looking around in the mach files too and found that eth0 MAC is wlan0 MAC and if there would be an eth1, it took the wlan1 MAC, so I'm correctly doing it to set it up via 02_network. Only thing is, after boot, it picks up a random MAC, but when br-lan pops, it assigns "back" the correct MAC (from wlan0) to eth0.

The biggest problem I'm having right now is after flashing my factory.bin, it starts dumping a lot of jffs2 related thing:

I think I have to "reset" these filesystems somehow first.
Have also the feeling, that my rootfs is not aligned correctly.

Ok now I'm up and running from flash :wink:
I think the too much beer made me loose my rootfs :stuck_out_tongue:

This is the complete log of the first correct boot from flash, we can see as right after bootup the eth0 has the garbage MAC and after br-lan pops in like 30secs, everything gets to its place correctly:

Let's see what it does with Luci.

Well I have to report, that everything is working flawlessly :wink:
Still need to set up the Leds correctly and switch the Wlan devices to reflect the original behavior, where wlan0 is the 2.4G and wlan1 the 5G. Anyway I dig deeper in things to polish the whole thing as much as possible :wink:

Congratulations!

Heading upstream with my contrib, hope it makes others happy as well!

Meanwhile I just found I have a very similar powerline device based on the very same board/soc, so I think I'll not put down this storyline for a while - it has just so much fun and magic turning devices to work with the brightest tech :wink:
