Looking for a router 5x Gigabit or 5x 10GBASE-T

2.5gig managed switch instead of t-56 and router on vm on server? Since you are using already vlans.

Damn I like that idea !

But how create a VM with OpenWRT?

I've found only this:https://downloads.openwrt.org/releases/17.01.1/targets/x86/64/

But I don't which file is bootable in the vm to initiate the install, is there any tutorial about this ?

Thanks.

Just set some vm like for normal linux distro, hdd like 256-512MB, ram how much You need like 256MB or mooore, set one nic for lan and second for wan, remember mac addresses, boot some live linux distro, download new image of openwrt like combined squashfs, open terminal, unpack img and flash it via dd command. Reboot, set all what you need. Do separate bridge for wan nic and vlan port from isp. Try that. Or check also pfsense/ opnsense or whatever you want , tomato64 also is nice.

Thanks @M10 !

Damn I've look the price for a PCIe NIC for my server with few ports in 2.5GbE the price are insane compare to a all-in router box !

So I will not go in the direction at the moment even if it was my preferred so far,.

70€ (give or take) for a 2.5GbE quad port card isn't that bad, imho ?

Used dual port (server pulls) 10GbE cards are usually cheaper (if you're in US, they start around $10 on eBay) though, but they won't do multigig, 1 and 10gbit only.

Yeah, that's why i went cheap 10gig way. I see no reason why to bother with slower multiport nic instead of cheaper and faster eneterprise gear. Yeah intel x520 is dirt cheap today, it sip bit more energybut when this isn't a problem it works amazing. But 25gig mellanox cards are slowly go this way too. Best nic for homelab is intel x710 and e810. Split vlans on nice switch and sleep peacefully.

Fun fact - on aliexpress live x520 like cards and they do 1/2.5/10Gb , atleast they wrote that they do.

same here, 10GbE links to ISP and switch, from switch 2.5GbE ports to APs and office, the remaining 1GbE's to "less needy clients".

How can X520 do 2.5GbE????

But now there is new and cheap alternative: Realtek RTL8126 5GbE multi-gig

I just ordered one and waiting for it to come.

This worked for me. There are many to choose from on Amazon, but their prices have just shot up due to ummm.... tarrifs. I'm currently trying to find a workable M.2 3320 wifi card that does AP mode on Wifi7, and transmission-daemon has serious performance issues. Other than that, perfect

BPI-R4 Pro with 4x 2.5 G + 2 X10G

Any release date? I'm going to travel to China in August and it would be great if that's released by that time.

before trashing the "crap" the hw is actually quiet good for the price. you should check if any of the units are supported by openwrt.
if they had satified u in the past with openwrt running they also will in the future.....
