Linksys WRT3200ACM - OpenWRT 23.05.3 - Internet dies randomly

Hello,

I have a problem with my network related to my Linksys WRT3200ACM which I would like help to troubleshoot. For context, I've used openwrt a few years, was running the initial version I flashed in maybe end of 2020 on this router with no issues, recently upgraded my router because I bought another router to use as a Dumb AP and wanted to install DAWN.

Setup:

  • Router 1: Linksys WRT3200ACM - OpenWrt 23.05.3 r23809-234f1a2efa / LuCI openwrt-23.05 branch git-24.073.29889-cd7e519
  • Router 2: Cudy WR3000 - OpenWrt 23.05.3 r23809-234f1a2efa / LuCI openwrt-23.05 branch git-24.073.29889-cd7e519

Simplified network diagram (just showing three clients I’ll talk about later):

The network will work perfectly fine for some undetermined amount of time, then at some point I will lose internet. This is from the point of view of the laptop connected to wifi.

Here are things I have confirmed:

  • Wifi will remain connected, at the very least if connected to the AP.
  • If I try to ping an internet address, say 8.8.8.8, I get no route to host.
  • The main router (10.0.0.1) will also not respond to pings. The LuCI interface is not available.
  • I cannot ping the AP or connect to its LuCI (10.0.0.2).
  • Restarting the linksys router resolves the issue, but for undetermined amount of time (has failed again after 5 minutes, has failed again after 10 days)
  • Interestingly, if I have an active SSH connection from the laptop to the linux host, the ssh connection remains active and live after this failure. I can still type commands on the linux host.
  • If I disconnect and reconnect to Wifi, I do not get a local IP assigned, instead I get a 169.x.x.x ip which seems to be a default IP assigned by the laptop.

Things to confirm:

  • I believe that if I have an SSH connection to the router, that connection fails. I have tried to have a tmux running on the router logging into a file, with no success. I got one failure while doing this, the file was empty when I checked.
  • I believe the router has recovered on its own before, but generally I do not wait and restart it manually.
  • My Apple Home hub (wired Apple TV) also seems to stop getting internet access, as I get a notification that the hub goes offline. Need to confirm this as it could be just when I restart the router, I cannot recall the timing.
  • If I still have the connection open to the linux server, I’d like to see if that server stil has access to the internet. ie. is it my laptop only or the whole network that goes down.

I come to you to ask if anyone could provide some ideas on what could be happening here and what other steps I could try to find the root cause of this issue.

Thank you,

WPA3 enabled?

There are many possible causes, but failing or under-rated power adapters are known to create this type of behavior. If you have another power supply that you can try, that would be a good first step. Your WRT3200ACM likely uses a 12V supply -- take a look at the adapter to verify, and then look at the current capacity (amps). You'll want an adapter with the same voltage and the same (or ideally greater) current rating.

Aside from that:

Please connect to your OpenWrt device using ssh and copy the output of the following commands and post it here using the "Preformatted text </> " button:
grafik
Remember to redact passwords, MAC addresses and any public IP addresses you may have:

ubus call system board
cat /etc/config/network
cat /etc/config/wireless
cat /etc/config/dhcp
cat /etc/config/firewall

Thanks a lot for your input, I'll put the contents of the requested files below for both the main router that tends to fail and the dumb AP.

The power supply failing is interesting, I would not have thought of that, today internet failed again and I looked at the router, the LEDs were behaving the same as normal. Also would that still allow for the local ssh connection to remain active if that was the problem? That part of the whole issue really confuses me. Regardless I can definitely look at replacing that power supply.

During my research, I also saw https://github.com/openwrt/openwrt/issues/9555 which I am not sure could be related, and Linksys WRT3200ACM not responding and losing Internet connection - #10 by Charly_s which mentions reverting to previous version and not having issues anymore. I can also say that I did not have any issues with this router when I used the release I installed back in December 2020.

Appreciate the help!

Hello!

I found this thread because I also occasionally have issues with my internet connection. I have a Linksys MR8300, so I had the idea our problems could be related. After some reading, though, mine is very different in terms of hardware to your WRT3200ACM.

My issues have been only for the wan connection. I have a 1Gb/s connection, but sometimes it would for no reason change to 100 Mb/s or 10 Mb/s, and also causing the connection to completely stop. Sometimes I have rebooted it and it works as usual, but sometimes the problems persist between reboots.

When I connect my computer directly into my wan jack I get full speed, and also with my old router it runs steady for weeks.

Two weeks ago I used ethtool to set the advertised link speed to only 1000Mb/s. It has been running fine since then. Perhaps you can try that too on your router!

I use OpenWrt 23.05.3 r23809-234f1a2efa / LuCI openwrt-23.05 branch git-24.073.29889-cd7e519
