at some point these units only has one CPU port setup on the switch
witch means if you have that version the MAX speed is 1G bit over all interfaces
so it will 1/2 for wan to lan to 500M

Yeah, I've heard about this limitation, but some users were capable of getting at least 800 Mbps as you can see here:

..and you would know about the poor overall performance too

R7800 performance

Today I tested Linksys EA8500 (same hardware, as in R7800, but CPU 1.4Ghz instead of your 1.7GHz ), with OpenWRT 18.06.1 , default settings + light tuning (net buffers). static address, NAT, 2 PC (1st in LAN, 2nd in WAN), port forwarding (for tests in both directions) for Iperf port. have a look in the switch config and see if you have both ports in here eth0 and eth1

Yup, it got 2 ports in there
