fwiw, have you tried stock firmware on your router for L2TP vpn connection?

Procedure is same for Dlink, LInksys, Netgear, Tplink etc.
Then connect the vpn router to LAN port of your existing ISP facing router.
@bill888 l2tp w/o ipsec is not secure
