Issue configuring router as a "Dumb AP" (static IP causes brick)

Hello everyone,

I'm in the process of reconfiguring my home network, and I want to use my current OpenWRT router as a dumb AP. Here’s my current setup:

  • Main ISP router: 192.168.1.1
  • OpenWRT router: 192.168.2.1

Whenever I configure my OpenWRT router to use a static IP within my main router’s subnet (e.g., 192.168.1.2, which I’ve reserved on my main router), the OpenWRT router becomes completely unresponsive (bricked). The only way to recover is by performing a hard reset.

I followed the guide provided here: Configuration via LuCI.

Has anyone else encountered this issue? Are there any additional steps or configurations I should check to prevent this from happening?

Thanks in advance for your help!

What does reserved mean, in this case.

It is called "IP Reservation" in my ISP router, but it is basically a way to automatically allocate a local ip address to a device based on its MAC address.
Thanks for your reply frollic!

You connect the AP to be how, to the main router?

The AP is connected using an eth cable on one of the lan ports of the AP (not the uplink/wan one).

I assume the LAN side runs as an DHCP client ?

Hey frollic, never mind, I fixed it by doing a hard reset on my ISP router (I read this tip on a forum about my main router). I don't know what exactly caused it, but I can tell you for sure that this router (the ISP's) is really unstable and everyone on the internet is having problems (one way or another) with it.

Thanks anyway for your help, I really appreciate it.

Please let me know if there's any way I can buy you a coffee.

Set it to passthrough bypass direct mode, and let Openwrt handle your internets.
