The problem in your search and with this quest, modern targets are slowly migrating away from swconfig to DSA for the switch configuration, which is functionally equivalent (and partially superior), but needs a very different configuration approach.
Ok, while I am getting closer in understanding how I can setup what I want: See
If you want the WDS link to carry two VLANs (LAN=VLAN1, WLAN=VLAN3), then create two SSIDs in AP mode on the R7800 and connect each Client Router/AP to both of them.
Basically, you will be running two WDS links in parallel, and each of them carries exactly one VLAN.
This works without VLAN tagging on the WDS links.
I need another OpenWRT router as Wireless bridge master for testing. Before I am sure, that everything works what I want, I will not touch the existing system.
What do you think about a MikroTik RB2011UiAS-2HnD-IN as master ?
Client for testing will be a TP-Link TL-WR1043ND v1.8
MikroTik makes networking hardware and software, which is used in nearly all countries of the world. Our mission is to make existing Internet technologies faster, more powerful and affordable to wider range of users.
After testing this router makes a little bit sense for me, because it has more than 4 LAN ports.
Alternative is the ZyXEL NBG6817 (Armor Z2) - https://openwrt.org/toh/hwdata/zyxel/zyxel_nbg6817 which is nearly the same as my NetGear Nighthawk X4S (R7800), which I use as master for my running system. The Zyxel has a lot more power than the Mikrotik and it is available for 170€ while the Mikrotik costs about 110€.
Hi guys
I have upgraded my ZyXEL NBG6817 with:
OpenWrt 18.06.1 r7258-5eb055306f / LuCI openwrt-18.06 branch (git-18.284.42397-55ebe88)
I have checked that all packages are upgraded:
root@OpenWrt:~# opkg list-upgradable
root@OpenWrt:~#
But my router just reboots spontaneously and often. It can run for an hour without problem, then the whole system reboot. Most of the times the router reboots every 10-15 minutes, sometimes with 5 minutes interval. Here is my logread:

Device: netgear,r7800
Version: 18.06.1
Steps to reproduce:
The cras… h will happen with 100% certainty, but what exactly causes the problem is a little hard to say. It looks like large internet frames on WAN interface somehow trigger the error.
The WAN interface (eth.2) is untagged, on the LAN ports besides 1 untagged VLAN, 3 untagged VLANs exist. Only (possibly) relevant extra installed package is ip-tiny; it isn't used though for any custom configuration though.
From the syslog (from boot till Oops, seemingly non-related stuff redacted out):
