Is it possible to upgrade/downgrade firmware without breaking batman-adv mesh connectivity?

Not quite sure what exactly you ask, so two answers:

No. Yes.

  • No: the router will be rebooted after the flash. Connectivity naturally breaks at reboot
  • Yes: if you include the needed/installed packages in your personal firmware image (either by compiling with the full buildroot or by cooking up the firmware with the imagebuilder), the packages are there and your old config is there, so you will again have mesh connectivity after the router reboots after flashing

so flashing stock would break batman-adv?

Yes, as batman-adv is not included in the default OpenWrt image.
