I'd like to let everyone knows that with @dutchmill's help, the 24.10.0 version for the v1 Deco M5 not boot issue has been resolved. The lastest version at https://github.com/dutchmillbytes/openwrt/releases/tag/v24.10.0-deco works on v1 unit now. Thank you! @dutchmill
Hi JP89,
Iâm new to this and seem to be experiencing the same issue you encountered. Would you be able to share the troubleshooting steps you followed to get OpenWRT LuCI running on your Deco M5?
Thanks!
Which version m5 do you have? You need to know the hardware version and pick the corresponding openwrt version to install, I have v1 m5, the 24.10.0 openwrt for v1 m5 was having issue but itâs been fixed now, I saw someone mentioned a few posts up that v3 works too. Not sure about the situation of other versions though. Good luck!
I successfully installed the V2 factory.bin from this release while following the flashing guide for my M5. However, after rebooting and completing the process, I can't access 192.168.1.1âthe browser displays, "192.168.1.1 took too long to respond."
I set my PC's IP address to 192.168.1.2 and attempted to ping 192.168.1.1, but I keep getting "Request Timed Out."
If anyone has successfully flashed an M5 V2, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
I would try to reset the m5 after you flashed the firmware by using a pin or something small to press the reset button in side the small hole on the back of the router for 10+ seconds, the router probably doesnât work if the it doesnât reboot and reset. If it reset then set you computer to automatically get IP address from router to see if it gets assigned a 192.168.1.x address, there is issue with the router if not. If router still doesnât work after you try the above mentioned steps, then try the flash the 23.05.5 version openwrt to see if you can get that to work. Good luck!
I just wanted to say thank you all contributing!
I was about to exchange my Deco M5 (I have 4) because I didnât like the app, the whole account thing, etc.
Then I found this thread. Read thru it all. Installed the bin from, cannot remember the user now, git repo. Everything just works.
Again, thank for all.
I have when question tho: is there any reason to install the sysupd bin if I just installed the factory bin (if they are the same version)?
sysupdgrade and factory bins are meant for different installation methods, they should be exactly the same in terms of the firmware itself. I think you are good with only factory bin installation.
Hi all. Any hints on getting the M5 to take the initial flash? I have tried a V1 and a V3 unit and neither seems to contact the TFTP server. I have followed the TP-Link guide linked further up the thread and also tried on Linux. tcpdump doesn't show any connection attempt.
Make sure that you use the ethernet port that is furthest away from the power connection.
Thank you. I have been trying both, but will note that as I continue to try. One less iteration to go through!
Is it a case of holding the reset button until something is seen on the tftpd side or are there any other timings or hints? The V1 will start the rainbow led after 5 secs or so, then goes red after another 10 or so. The V3 led just seems to stay orange.
You keep the reset button pressed while powering on the device. Around 5-10 seconds after you should see the TFTP server serving the firmware. Then you can release the reset button.
After the automatic reboot the device should be pingable at 192.168.1.1 (donât forget to make sure your machine is part of a. 192.168.1.x network).
OK. No luck for me. I can see the activity in the log if I send a tftpd file get request from another machine, so should all be working, but nothing comes from the Deco units. Thanks anyway.
What version hardware do you have? @Denao
A 1.1 and 3.0
I have 5 v1's and used tftp method to flash them many times and never had a problem. I also flashed v3 version to some of them a few times, it worked fine. If you don't get the message on the tftp server that the firmware was sent or something, then your unit may have hardware issue, but I think the chance of both units being bad is very low. If you did see the message that the firmware was successful sent, be sure to the use the factory version bin, not the sysupdgrade one. Good luck!
Hello, friends. I have a set of Deco M5 US/1.0 units that I'd love to install OpenWRT on, and the recent comments in this thread make me think it's possible. I'm encouraged! However, I haven't been able to identify the best path to that goal from the 4 years and 450 comments in this thread, as I haven't been able to read them all from top-to-bottom while weeding out the false starts and sand traps you've discovered along your way to success.
Is there a Deco M5 HowTo guide with links to the relevant documents or forum comments I have overlooked?
