Iphone tethering: no usb0 device showing up

I installed today latest openwrt snapshot version on a raspi 3 B+ (OpenWrt SNAPSHOT r26815-b4069fad02 / LuCI Master 24.158.03388~a6f8361)
and followed Smartphone USB tethering to install all required packages/drivers.

When connecting my Google Pixel tethering is working as expected but when connecting a iPhone 13 mini (iOS 17.5.1) there is no usb0 device although log says: Apple iPhone USB Ethernet device attached

From my win11 laptop tethering is working with the iphone, so it's not a provider issue.
I already tried several hints like enable/disable hotspot, restarted iphone, restarted openwrt but without success. Do I miss something?

Thanks for any hint!

Does ip link show show any new device when the iPhone is attached?

Note that you must unlock the screen of the phone (to prove that you own it and prevent unauthorized tethering) and probably go to the settings and enable USB tethering.

no - no new interface from ip link show. iPhone has unlocked screen.

go to the settings and enable USB tethering

There is no separate usb tethering setting any more I know of - just enabling/disabling access on personal hotspot.
