i just installed OpenWrt 24.10.4 on my Linksys WRT1900ACS (naming and password of the wifi is the same as with the Linksys firmware) - everything works fine but all the connections to some smart plugs “ZOOZEE se131” are extremly fluctuating and the connection to my Diswasher Bosch Serie 6 SMS6ZCI16E is completley gone and not to bring back…
What could be the problem? Do i have to configurate something specific that these modues will run again?
The mwlwifi wireless chipset (firmware and drivers) are known to be 'picky' and especially IoT devices are not exactly beloved by them. There might not be a fix for this, but rather inherent limitations of these chipsets; it's a well-known and long-standing issue (and there is no further driver/ firmware development for them, as Marvell sold their WLAN department and the buyer/ NXP doesn't care).
The GL.Inet Flint 2 (NOT 3) is quite popular among advanced users, occassionally on sale in a similar price range as the BPi-R3. Don't buy (essentially) a devboard (BPi-R3), unless you know why you want one. There are several other options (depending on your region), some of which may be cheaper.
That should be equivalent to WPA2-PSK/ CCMP (and 802.11w disabled!), but some details might still differ - sometimes devices need to be re-onboarded/ reconfigured, to accept the change.
Thanks - with my next device i want to bring up also a samba server with a large drive attached to the already running router… and for that suppose this Flint 2 has no connection…
Have tried that - at least my Dishwasher is back online and the feedback of the smart plugs (if they are on or off) is also back - but still can´t config any new smart plug device… will try it tomorrow…
A router is not the best choice for samba, both in terms of performance as well as in regards to the security question (needlessly extends the attack surface). Keeping those services separate is usually preferable. Typical NAS hardware these days comes with considerably faster CPUs and more RAM - and thatt shows.
Oh - i need it only for small local “backups” - for the large amount of data i have a real pc with kodi in the network - and for external sharing i have some large Nextcloud instances in our data center with 10G connections… at home (and this is it all about) I think about the power consumption which is way to high with my media-pc always on…
There is one obvious difference, mixed vs pure WPA2PSK (no, you really shouldn't enable mixed-mode (it's insecure and can also be a cause for issue by itself), but it is a difference). Beyond that there are often more subtle differences in the wireless AP configuration, some clients stick to those, most don't - you'll never know and with the OEM firmware checking is hard.
Let’s see your configuration to make sure there aren’t any obvious issues.
Please connect to your OpenWrt device using ssh and copy the output of the following commands and post it here using the "Preformatted text </> " button (red circle; this works best in the 'Markdown' composer view in the blue oval):
Remember to redact passwords, VPN keys, MAC addresses and any public IP addresses you may have:
Try disabling 802.11w, OCV, roaming, wide operating channels, LDPC and WPA3 mixed modes. Many older (and IoT) devices struggle even if those enabled in compatibility mode. Probably it's not bad idea to buy a router with dedicated wireless for IoT devices only.
