Installing OpenWrt to Zyxel 3301-PLUS, can't find modem device

Hi,

My goal is use 3301-plus as dumb lte bridge.

  • I have installed snapshot: openwrt-ramips-mt7621-zyxel_lte3301-plus-squashfs-sysupgrade.
    I have network connection and I managed to install several packages to make usb interfaces work. I rebooted several times after package installations but now I don't know what to do.

I followed tutorials:

Problem is I can't find usb serial interface devices or modem.

Only usb-hub 2.0 and usb-hub 3.0 in usb-devices.

In this case, it is even harmful as the chosen name is misaligned with the userspace script setting the default "on" value:

Note that the LTE5398 is actually using those names in the DT, so either the userspace config has to be split or the LTE3301 dts needs to be changed to matched one of the LTE5398 names.

Or maybe just use a gpio-hog instead? Is there ever any need to cut power to the modem?

This looks redundant as there is a gpio-hog for USB port in the DTS.

I suppose yes. There are situations where neither +CFUN command nor usbreset tool can help to bring the modem back into service, so having a power toggle option is a big bonus.

OK, I take it that these routers don't have any modem reset line like the NR7101 has? There I opted to use gpio-hogs for both(!) the modem power controls, but left the reset line for userspace as shown by the script above.

I didn't see any references to the GPIO controlled modem reset on this model.
BTW, I spent some time playing with the new libgpiod based approach but gave up at some point. Stuck here.

I have no experience with libgpiod and I'm in no way an export on GPIOs. But I don't think setting direction output without a value makes sense. Or rather - there's an implicit value there whether you like it or not. If libgpiod forces it to be explicit then that's good.

Now I can't even remember why it was necessary to set the direction :wink:
It may have had something to do with the userspace tools being used.
BTW, libgpiod approach looks like a perfect fit for the modem reset task, the userspace tool gpioset allows setting the given GPIO low or high for a specified amount of time then exit. More elegant than two echo.
