Install Openwrt with Hotspot? No Ethernet and such

Hi I tried to find info how install Openwrt specifically by using Phone mobile data.

I want build a router (Raspberry PI) by using mobile data fed by my phone Android through its hotspot. I need router because I have smart devices which refuse to connect to my phone as it doesnt recognize it as router.

I tested to install by Pi Imager where I told Hotspot name and password but it doesnt connect through OpenWrt. It did work for me with other OS like 3dprinter. It seems that OpenWrt wifi is disabled by default?

It doesn't seem, it is.

This is using a cable though.

ok, Raspberry would need double wifi to work as it wont receive and send at the same time, right?

Would it work if I use 1# raspberry to receive and send through ethernet to #2 raspberry so #2 raspberry turns to a router?

The Pi cannot operate in both AP and STA mode simultaneously. It is not supported.

Yes, this would be possible. However, once you're doing this, you'd be better off with a real router or AP, rather than a Pi. The wifi capabilities of the Pi are not well suited for use as an AP -- the system uses a very low end 1x1 radio with limited range and low bandwidth, and it is particularly poorly equipped for handling multiple client devices. Even a modes and somewhat old wifi AP or all-in-one wifi router will run circles around the Pi from the perspective of wifi performance.

Maybe USB-Wifi dongle is a better idea. I have already a few Raspberry Pi boards and I want to use router only for smarthome devices as I use phone as hotspot for fast internet.

Slow speed of raspberry router is fine  At the moment, Im trying fix ethernet between PC and Raspberry. I tested Smartphone USB tethering and i couldnt download files because i need to set up internet

I also add one thing. I use my phone as wireless everywhere so I want avoid cable tethering whether charging or internet tethering. I use cellular network as only internet I have (unlimited data though very slow). Then I looking for a way to boost 5g or something then I need a device and an antenna which is not cheap.

Same deal applies with USB wifi dongles -- most of them are not particularly great in terms of performance. Some do not support AP mode at all. And of course, you will need to install the appropriate driver packages to get them running

This may result in even lower performance, but it is certainly possible to do, provided you have 2 wifi interfaces (one as sta and configured with a network that is treated as a wan, the other as AP on a network that is the lan).

Are you referring to 5GHz wifi, or 5G cellular?

Peter, thanks for the reply.

I was referring to 5G cellular. In cities, my phone is fast up to 100-250mps then a bit away at my home, it drops to 10mps download and 3 Mbps upload.

For, me, the raspberry router is useful for smart home devices as they are refusing to connect to my phone as they want to connect to an AP. I dont think they require high speed for closing off/on lamp unless you want 0.1 ms

In the future, 5g cellular-type router with support for an antenna would be nice as I might get a boost like in cities. Then the router will be useful.
