Improving Home Network Performance with Mobile Tethering

I'm looking to optimize my home internet setup and would appreciate some advice. Currently, I achieve 300-500 Mbps with 20-25ms latency on my Samsung Z Flip4 (5G). My goal is to maintain or improve this performance for 4K video streaming and work-from-home needs (I'm not a gamer).

My proposed setup involves using the Z Flip4 for internet access and distributing it via two OpenWrt routers:

  • Wavlink WN533A8 (Tri-band, USB 3.0): I plan to tether the Z Flip4 via USB 3.0 to this router.
  • Netgear WNR2200 (USB 2.0): This router would be placed on the other side of the house, connected wirelessly to the Wavlink, to extend the Wi-Fi range.

I also have a USB-C hub with Ethernet and charging capabilities and plan to use the Z Flip4's mobile hotspot as a backup, managed by mwan3 on the Wavlink.

My questions are:

  • Can this setup be optimized for lower latency and higher speeds? Specifically, would Ethernet tethering (using my USB-C hub) offer a significant improvement over USB tethering?
  • Are there other configurations or software solutions (e.g., Dawn, SQM) that could further enhance performance and stability?

Any suggestions for improving this setup are welcome.

Best would be to cable-bridge two OpenWRT-s. Android NAT can serve as primitive network address manager.
