could be my browser but clicking image > local file browser pops up
( no selector like before to choose local or from web )...
i'm indifferent to this... but just noting it here in case it's something that has crept in via update or alike...

That was removed on purpose as it required extra clicks for the local upload user flow, which is the predominant use case.
You will need to create/commission a theme-component if you want a wizard to create image external image markdown code.
ouch! why do I get the feeling this is not entirely the full reason...
anyways... we now know... and like I said... it's not really a must have for me...
but I suspect it cuts down on alot of www image storage...

Possibly too easy to insert harmful/unverified pictures from net.
Ps. Interesting that you call the intentional removal as "bug" in the upstream forum. Sounds like a feature removal to me.
