Hello, this is the 3rd trying to install adguard home or adblock on my Tp-Link Archer C6U v1 (EU). After reading all how to's and guides, I got even more lost, because the terms kept coming. All I managed so far is to reflash my router with Openwrt and enable wireless, then play with some of the settings. I noticed right away that my security camera in the other corner of the house doesn't connect to the router anymore, so the range dropped on the 2Ghz band. I hope someone can help me and there's a fix for that.
The main issue is that another user answered my question in a how to thread and told me that he doesn't recommend installing Adguard home or Adblock on this router as it has only 16MB storage and 120MB RAM or something like that. Is it really that bad? It has a USB slot.
I tried last night from the Software tab to update the packages and installed the usb drivers, ntfs3, then tried to install a shell interface, tried luci-ttyd and openssh, they installed, but I thought a new tab would appear. I don't know how to access them. That's a big issue as all the guides say "execute this command ..." Ok, but where? I'm lost, I don't know where to input the commands. I'm on Windows 10. Would cmd prompt even know what all the commands are about?
Anyone has the time to explain how all this works? I just want ads blocked on my wifi for the wife phone, tablet and our Smart TV.
I use uBlock Origin on my PC and her laptop so that's not an issue. Help please!
for adblocking it is, those site lists eat RAM.
what do you need ntfs3 for ?
why would do you install openssh ?
without knowing the context, probably via ssh, on the router.
since you're on Windows, download Putty.
adblocking using the router won't be as granular as a browser addon.
-There are other posts with users using this router model with adguard or adblock
-installed ntfs3 like the guide said for the usb stick I inserted into the router which is formatted as NTFS
-i installed what i found users mentioning on the forum, i have no idea what to use to input commands, and luci-ttyd and openssh didn't work anyway, or I don't know where to find them. is it a url, is it an app, how do i access them?
-what is putty, will it integrate on the openwrt interface as another tab, will i access it via a link/ip, is it an executable?
-well I need any adblocking solution for Android devices and stuff like Tablet, phone and Smart TV, mostly youtube. Although I read that aside PC extensions like uBlock, there is no real solution to adblocking on Android. I use Mozilla with uBlock on my phone to access youtube without ads, but can't do that on my smart tv for example, need a solution
did I say it wasn't usable ?
no official openwrt guide would ever recommend NTFS (one can hope, at least).
google putty ?
you can stop right there, there's no ad block solution for youtube using DNS, only browser addons can do this.
you're wasting your time.
or buy YT premium.
Look into Adblock lean:
the one i used was formatted using ntfs and read that it's more stable than fat32 or exfat which are used for ssds and microusb anyway
i googled putty, you're telling me that every guide or comment saying 'input x into ssh' was a general term and you can use any shell console or whatever this is?
please don't be condescending, i'm really trying to find a solution. if my router is usable, help me get there, thanks
which are all Microsoft file systems, not *nix native.
you're not using any OS from Microsoft, on your router.
correct
I'm just saying you'll be disappointed, since it won't do what you want.
Brave works in Windows and Android.
When using Windows some very nice tools to have and install on your windows client are:
Putty a telnet and SSH client
and
WinSCP a utitlity to copy files to and from your router and to view those files
what does it have to do with DNS blocking in the YT app ?
Outside the box of DNS blocking.
Literally asking for another solution.
well, they already know it works in a browser, it was posted earlier ...
Yeah, can't install Brave on my TV Stick anyway, was hoping to get rid of ads mostly on youtube, but I guess it's not possible
Other than your TV, the Brave browser blocks all ads on YouTube.
Nothing blocks ads using the YouTube app. It is impossible.
if it's an Amazon Fire TV, try using Easy Fire Tools app on you Android device.
there are however replacement apps. even in the Google play store, for the Google YT app, which will remove all or most of the YT ads.
That is ironic.
very much, indeed
Vanced was discountinued, replaced with some app that ironically is filled with ads. It's a Realme TV Stick using Google TV OS. I couldn't find anything in the store, and of course there's nothing as Google owns Android and wouldn't allow such applications
Makes no sense, I went this far thinking that only a pi hole or adblock integrated into the router would remove yt ads. I even configured my router with adguard dns and other settings in the past, but the test was done on my TV which of course failed every time. I probably was successful, but only for other sources. Will never know now, here I am being told that it would've been easier to just stick to my OEM firmware for my TP-Link and keep using Mozilla with uBlock on my PC, Laptop, Phone and not losing 3 days trying to learn to use openwrt and all these packages, ssh, etc. That's depressing
there's revanced now
if the only feature you ever wanted, was the YT app ad blocking, then yes.
can't really blame openwrt for not being able to block YT app ads.
Mini PC, HDMI cable, remote keyboard, Brave.
