I need a new router in the $50-$250 range in the EU

Hey there,

I broke my old router and I am looking for a new one.

I have a gigabit uplink. I want no fewer than 4 LAN ports. And I need to have at least a single proper 5G connection possible.

I am not sure how much use it would be for me but Wifi6 sounds nice.

I don't mind spending a little bit more on something capable. Though the Turris Omnia is out of my price range.

Does anybody have good recommendations for a performant router that can be (ab)used by an enthusiast?

And 5g means...

BPI-R3:

  • 5 ethernet ports (1000Mbps)
  • Onboard WiFi 6 (You don't need to buy WiFi module).
  • Power consumption: 4.9W on idle and about 11W on full load.
  • You can use SQM CAKE up to 500 Mbps and without SQM up to 2500 Mbps (SFP module).
  • You can add a SFP GPON Stick and replace your ISP's ONU.
  • You can add a 4G LTE-A module.
  • Price: $121 Total

BPI-R4:

  • 4 ethernet ports (1000Mbps)
  • You need to buy this WiFi 7 module: BE-14 (there are plans for a BE-19)
  • Power consumption: 9W on idle and about 23W on full load.
  • Without SQM up to 10G (SFP module).
  • You can add a SFP GPON Stick and replace your ISP's ONU.
  • You can add a 4G LTE-A or 5G module.
  • Price: $207 Total (including WiFi 7 module)

Wow the BPi-R4 looks very interesting! Even more powerful than the Turrs Omnia I was looking at before.

With a case, heatsing and Wifi7 module I am at 216 euro's + 28 in shipping so 243 euro's total. Perfecly under my arbitrary budget.

If you don't need the 2 SFP ports I think the BPI-R4 PoE version would be better, I'm not really sure.

Here Banana Pi sells the regular version of the BPI-R4 with two SFP ports in a complete set with all accessories together (including the WiFi 7 module + antennas, but you need to buy a better power supply), no need to buy them separately (less shipping cost):

On the Banana Pi forum they recommend buying a better power supply than the one sold by Banana Pi for the BPI-R4:

In case you need more Ethernet ports, you can add this cheap 1G SFP Ethernet port module:

More SFP modules are recommended here:

If serious fan noise isn't an issue for you, and you can live without fast wifi (or outsource it), there's the Dell Edge 680 - https://www.ebay.de/itm/226214736858

Seller will probably accept offers in the 200€ area, perhaps even less.

That's a sweet deal, thanks for sharing! Fan noise is a bit of an issue though. I ended up ordering a BPi-R4
