I have a question about WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode?

I have two iPhone 7s at home. My other devices are on the new 5G network; I've left my older devices on 2.4G. My question is, if I set all my devices to 5G using WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode, will I encounter any problems? How would you configure your network?

The radio band (2.4G vs 5G) has nothing to do with the encryption type (WPA2/WPA3 or mixed mode).

That said... the recommendation in most cases is to:

  • Use both bands (2.4 and 5)
  • Set both bands to the same SSID and passphrase
  • Use WPA2 or WPA3, but do not use mixed mode (many client devices don't work well with mixed mode operation).
    • if you have older devices that require WPA2, then this is an obvious choice -- WPA2 only.
