install and configure https-dns-proxy or smartdns.

AdGuard Home, dnsproxy, https-dns-proxy, stubby, unbound, DNSCrypt and SmartDNS are tools that support secure DNS protocols such as DoT, DoH and DNSCrypt.
You just need to choose one of them.

Everyone has different needs and perspectives.
Initially i had adguardhome and people mentioned its bloated hence moved to https dns proxy
AdGuard Home is big piece of software, where the DNS server is only an addition.
Speaking of the topic of the protocol, this table shows the differences quite well:
I would add that if you want maximum performance and confidentiality, use DNSCrypt, and if you want your DNS traffic to be least visible to the ISP, use DoH on a standard port. However, if you are looking for a solution that will have only pluses - there is no such one, every protocol is somehow flawed.
If it works well why listen to others?
AdGuard Home has a lot of features and a beautiful UI, not everyone has an adequate device to run AdGuard Home.
agree with @frollic
If by "falling apart" you mean that for about 48 hours there was an issue with https-dns-proxy not starting on boot for a percentage of its users, then yes, https-dns-proxy on 24.10 is falling apart.
I'm happy you found the package which works for you, but going out of your way to badmouth (often times hysterically incompetently) another package is petty.
Which is the correct step for installing adguardhome

Or
TLDR, they look quite similar.
The Official twiki completely isolates local DNS resolution while the AdGuardHome version maintains some dnsmasq functions for DHCP coordination
