How to install custom kernel on OpenWrt?

So I'd like to create a custom router with a raspberry pi 3 and thought I'd use openWRT, however I'd like to know if I can install other types of kernels on it? E.g. a low latency kernel like liqourix or xanmod.
Does anyone know how or if it can be even done?

No, you can't - see the following for details:

Do you happen to know of an alternative to openWRT that would allow me to install a low latency kernel like liqourix?

It would be "intricate", but you could look at adding the (say) liquorix patches for the relevant kernel to an OpenWrt build environment.

How would you know the low latency was working for you? What are you trying to achieve with it?
