I have tested tethering onto several various devices. Setting up is straight forward and I have never had any issue, except for the usb0/eth2 misunderstanding. Except for kmod-usb-net-rndis everything related to USB should already be installed in the default image.
For example my current spare device is a WNR3700v2. Check the default packages.
you were right, it was the change from eth2 to usb0 that messed it up for me.
.0 works with eth, .4 uses usb.

If I remember correclty, it was usb previously (23.05), than eth in 24.10.0 and again usb since 24.10.1.
