How do I make the router connect to hotspot more aggressively

It takes awhile for OpenWRT to connect to a just turned on hotspot. How do I make it seek out a connection faster and more aggressively?

I am not an experienced administrator. I've used the "easy" UI config to make the router connect and repeat a phone hotspot WiFi. My problem is - after turning the hotspot on, it takes awhile for OpenWRT to connect to it and start repeating. Is there a way to make it connect to the hotspot as soon as it pops up?
