If they can't be accessed, why put them there in the first place?

I think the OP is looking for some form of obfuscation, probably to protect IP? Which is beyond the scope of what OpenWrt as a FOSS project stands for.

You'd need to look at some form of encryption I suppose so the SquashFS at rest cannot be accessed but can be decrypted in the boot process (otherwise it would be unusable).
