Hooking up miniPCIe via USB

Hi,

I'm building a travel router that supports a GSM modem. My priority is that the setup has to support modern wifi (not necessarily AX, but 2.4+5Ghz is a must), but also be able to handle a gsm modem. I could easily go with GL-Inet travel routers like Beryl AX, but there is one catch: I need the modem to be able to use and manage eUICC sim card. Unfortunately usb dongle lte modems do not support at commands to be used with lpac. I have only found miniPCIe modems that can do that, so I'm looking for some advice.

  1. Is it a sane approach to find a cheap pcie modem like Quectel EC25 and grab a wwan minipcie to usb adapter from aliexpress? Will this setup work? Any issues or downsides? I just need LTE speed, no 5G is needed (low price is a priority)?
  2. Perhaps there is a travel router with onboard miniPCIe slot or modem with 5Ghz >=800mbps wifi that works fine with OpenWRT? The GL-Inets (Mudi and Puli) are great, but they only have 2.4GHz wifi and are definitely not cheap. I need it to be small and portable, so I had to rule out soho routers with 4G modems.

Also - I like to hack up strange setups - it does not need to be super noob-friendly. I just need for it to be stable, handle multiple SSIDs and lpac to manage my eSIMs inside the eUICC
