I am currently using a TP-Link Archer C6, which I really like and am thankful for the development work of the OpenWrt team.
However, my girlfriend dislikes the optics of the routers, especially the antennas.
I can totally understand that she doesn't want to put it on the wall and the central point in our apartment is the corridor where we have a small shelve on which the current router is placed and where the new router should go as well.
The old router is a router which she received from her internet provider. It has low depth but is higher so it fits really good on the shelve.
I am searching for a router that has similar optics but is supported by OpenWrt as good as the Archer C6 is.
I am using the router as a mere home router, doing nothing fancy with it.
Important points:
Longterm support expected.
Optics: Low depth, but higher, not "sitting" but "standing" device, e.g. like the FRITZ!Box 4060.
Wifi Guest Mode possible.
Not too old hardware.
Btw question: Is it possible to export the config from the C6 and import it into another router?
I would suggest that you first look at the standard commercial offerings for "stylish" wifi routers to find one that fits the acceptable aesthetics for your environment and partner approval. Then, with that information, ask on this forum for devices that generally match that general look that are supported by OpenWrt.
Also, it's important to know if you would have the ability to run wires in the walls/ceiling. Some of the ceiling mounted APs can be quite attractive, and there are even wall mount ones that are nice, too. For example, look at the Unifi APs as one set style options. The Nest wifi is intended look more like a piece of art (although obviously you need to account for the wire runs). And there are tons of others. (keep in mind that not all devices will be supported by OpenWrt, but at least you can get ideas and provide more specifics about what you want it to look like).
Most modern devices that are supported by OpenWrt will be for a while to come... just make sure you get one with at least 16MB flash + 128MB RAM (or more).
Again, look at the different styles in conjunction with your ability to run wires in walls... then it's easier to pick a specific device class.
Anything that runs OpenWrt can do this.
Anything we'd recommend would be recent.
No, but it can be manually migrated, often without much difficulty.
Hello guys, thanks a lot to you all for your answers.
I am not looking to drill and the device doesn't need to look fancy or special. @frollic The two you have mentioned are exactly what I am looking for. You can easily place them on the shelve without loosing to much space. @dante The thread is also a good starting point.
Thanks a lot. There are just so many devices supported that I didn't know where to start looking.
@psherman: You were right, alwys best to first ask the partner.
I've shown her the devices, she said that she is happy with any, but she'd prefer a black device like the Acer RT-AX59U mentioned by @cookiemonster88888.
Does anyone can point me to a few more black devices by any chance?
Thanks a lot!
Half of them are. I have tuf-ax4200 wall-mounted on the back of tv mount frame, could be mercusys mr90x (dont look up if scared of spiders) as much as aesthetics are concerned.
