Help with Installing VLESS VPN on OpenWRT Router (Best Practice & Options)

Hi everyone,

I’m currently running an OpenWRT router and would like to install VLESS VPN (from the V2Ray project) directly on it. I’ve searched quite a bit, but it seems like setting up VLESS on OpenWRT is not as straightforward as with other VPN protocols like WireGuard or OpenVPN.

My goal is to have the router act as a VLESS client (or optionally server), routing specific devices or all traffic through a VLESS tunnel. Ideally, I'd like:

  • Stable and lightweight VLESS client setup
  • Optional routing rules (e.g., only certain IPs via VLESS)
  • Advice on which packages I need (e.g., v2ray-core or other builds)
  • Storage/memory considerations on low-resource routers

Has anyone here successfully installed and run VLESS on OpenWRT?
Would really appreciate guidance, best practices, or even working examples.

Thanks in advance!

You have to provide some background on why would one use a vpn protocol not documented in English at all.
Including the part about country youre in.
