Having problems setting up sqm

hi, im having problems setting up sqm, i have an adsl connection (16 down/1 up) and set up the sqm settings the following way:
eth0
14000
700
cake
piece of cake
atm
44

when i run the test i always seem to be in the kilobytes region though bufferbloat is non existent but the speed isnt up to par. Any ideas on what i may be doing wrong?

Could you shell into your router and show the output of "tc -s qdisc" ?

In addition to the "tc -s qdisc" that @Arie proposed, please also post the output of "cat /etc/config/sqm" and if you can please also report the sync bandwidth your dsl modem reports. Thanks.

hey guys thanks for the responses. im quite new to all of this, could you explain how to show the output of “tc -s qdisc” and output of “cat /etc/config/sqm”

you need to log into your router via a secure shell (ssh) terminal, https://www.turris.cz/doc/en/howto/ssh has a decent description how to do this from different host operating systems.

Best Regards

SSH in to the router, input the commands in the root shell, highlight the output, copy and paste it in to a reply on here.

Linux/Unix

  1. open a terminal
  2. use command "ssh -l root [your router IP]"
  3. accept key
  4. login as root

Windows

  1. use a program such as PuTTY (freeware)
  2. enter the fields appropriately (user: root, pass: [your pass], host/IP: [router IP], port: 22)
  3. accept key (if applicable)

any ideas on what to do? ive been messing around with various settings but to no avail, keep getting speeds in the kilobytes.

what test are you running?

im using dslreports, ive tried rebooting the router and implementing the sqm but i get the same results

maybe the problem is here

Can you upload sqm screenshots from luci?

05

option interface is 'eth0' here.

there is no 'eth0' in your cat /etc/config/sqm
still have problems?
what's your DSL results?

yeah im unsure about etho.
my dsl results are 250kb 100kb up usually without sqm its 16mb 1mb down

Okay that is not good, on a bridged interface the distinction between ingress and egress are gray instead of black and white, so do not expect meaningful results unless you request equal bandwidth for ingress and egress. Typically it is recommended to instantiate the main shaper on the WAN interface, or if you have to on the local (vlan-)interface that is connected to the switch. I would not be amazed, if shaping on br-lan would result effectively in ingress and egress being shaped to 800...

oka, you have two shapers here, one on eth0 and one on br-lan. That seems bad, what does "tc -s qdisc" return after a reboot of the router?

Could you please post the results of tose tests here (ideally a link to the detailed result page as described in https://forum.openwrt.org/t/sqm-qos-recommended-settings-for-the-dslreports-speedtest-bufferbloat-testing/2803)

Okay, please reboot the router then:

  1. cat /etc/config/sqm
  2. tc -s qdisc
  3. run a dslreports speedtest, and post the results here
  4. tc -s qdisc

hopefully this will give is some clues... Oh, also what kind of router are you using?
