Hard drive alert

I logged in the other day and noticed my backup drive was "not present"; it had gone dead

i quickly replaced it and resynced. Is there any way to setup notifications for an event like this? I cant rely on me manually check drive status daily...

maybe nagios core monitoring could help?

Install msmtp package.
Write a script with a loop and a sleep.
In the loop, check if a specific file on the disk exists.
If it does not exist use msmtp to send you an email.
Run the script in the background by starting with an & at the end. You can start at boot time from /etc/rc.local

i guess a cronjob (scheduled task) would also do the trick (and eliminate need to sleep)
i just got to get msmtp working (after im done restoring)
