I upgraded my router (GL-MT6000) to the newest firmware 24.10.0 and since the upgrade it has not been getting an IP from the WAN. I've confirmed that my WAN settings have changed on the router since the upgrade and done a full reset of the router and return to stock firmware without any luck.
I have also rebooted my modem and router multiple times so I'm not sure what could be causing it. I welcome any ideas as my ISP is not that helpful as is par for the course.
What did you upgrade from? My Flint2s are still on 23.05, and I'm being a bit cautious about upgrading. Did you do an attended sysupgrade, or a fresh install and restore? If you did an attended sysupgrade, did you re-install any packages that were not part of the base install?
I am running one with a fresh 24.10.0 with no problems, so I think this is probably quite a simple issue.
I think that with 24.10.0 the DSA settings have had bugs fixed, which is good, but the effect is that the wan mac address is now different. I noticed this mac change but the way I am connecting to the Internet, it did not matter.
I'm connecting to cable modem. Standard arris surfboard that has been solid till the upgrade of the router. Part of me is wondering if the modem is bad as I plugged directly into it with a lapotp and wasnt able to get an IP. My ISP though sees the modem online so it could be a MAC caching issue.
I have another modem I will probably troubleshoot with if needed tonight to rule out if it's the modem. Or not.
I did a sysupgrade from 23.05 to 24.10.0. When I had issues I first did an erase of the router settings to default which didn't work and then I reverted back to my old firmware (23.05) with old settings without any luck.
Contact the isp and tell them what the new wan mac address is. This is a very common problem. I'm not 100% sure this is the problem here, but worth checking.
For me anyway, every time I flashed 23.05 I got a different mac address.
Now with 24.10 I always get the same.
Alright thanks I'll give a shot and as for the old firmware (23.05) getting a new Mac address every reboot that would explain why I would have to reboot my modem everytime I made a change that caused my router to reboot.
In seriousness though solution was stupid simple. As bluewavenet said
and they were a 100% correct. All I did was go into LuCi select Network -> Interfaces. Then I found my WAN port which in my case was eth1 and set the MAC address to what is was before the update (luckily I had this info in a backup). As soon as I did that and a quick restart of that port I got an IP.
I can also confirm that in firmware 24.10 when I reboot the router my MAC address is staying the same and I no longer need to reboot my modem to get an IP. This is the same as bluewavenet said
quick tip for the future, the modem holds the mac address until reboot, next time just unplug the modem and router, plug modem in, wait 3 minutes, plug router in, golden. (i was a cable technician for over 10 years) its all about the order you do it in, make sure the router is unplugged while rebooting the modem
