I have secured a copy for myself. There are no shipping costs. I will use it as a backup for my current installation. I have never received an OpenWRT compatible router for so little money.
Cound down 3...
Cound down 2...
Wow, what an ugly hulk
Cound down 1...
It's ugly, the OEM firmware is even worse (both cosmetically and in terms of bugs) - worst of all, the OEM firmware hasn't been updated in half a decade, the streamboost servers are down for just as much time (so their intended gamer target won't be lucky at all).
But with OpenWrt, as long as you put a blindfold on, these are very nice devices - I probably wouldn't pay 29 EUR for them in 2023 thoughβ¦
It may be ugly, can't argue against that, but on the other hand an antenna forest isn't nice either ;- )
A similar used Netgear R7800 here is about 45 - 75β¬ and additionally you have to fetch locally or pay P&P
Don't get me wrong, I like my g10 (which I bought ~two years ago, used for roughly half of that) - it's a very nice router.
But today, things like dap-x1860/ covr-x1860/ wsm20 make decent 802.11ax APs for roughly half of that (new/ delivered) - and devices like rt3200/ dl-wrx36 start in the 40-70 EUR price range. Not quite a direct equivalent, but within a reasonable range for the improved wireless.
If you have the devices.... smartphones don't count, what you will do with ax speed (other criterias left aside)? And it gets worse if you have zero ax devices like me ;- )
Then probably you have missed that I previously posted a Netgear WAX206 which is ~USD 28 (and it's 4x4 80MHz or 2x2 160MHz 802.11ax AP/router with 2.5G WAN port) which is even better.
^^Surely not in Germany for that price. Second no one here has and need 2.5G WAN speed ;- )
But at least AX WiFi is a lot better than AC, I saw one German folks in this forum shipped that from Japan and eventually still less than EUR40 per device.
Despite your personal opinion against the design, the airflow and cooling is better because of the vertical vents and induced airflow compared to an e.g. standard flat placed Netgear R7800. Although you can equalize this if you mount the R7800 to a wall ;- )
No worries, I once owned one of these ugly multi-antenna black ASUS spiders, scared the heck out of visitors
Some additional notes:
Not yet, current OpenWrt support is hardcoded to use a single/ specific firmware slot only.
Be aware that this device (OEM bootloader) has a rather half-assed recovery method. If it fails to boot completely, 'great', it'll revert to the OEM firmware on the other slot - but if it boots up completely, just without allowing you access (there was a bug in the network setup shortly, ~a year ago), you are dead in the water and require serial console access.
Actually it's not fake, it opens to the side.
