FortiWiFi 50E and 50E-2R: is firmware interoperable?

This is a question squarely aimed at @musashino, but before I ask the actual question, I would like to publicly thank @musashino for his work of adapting OpenWrt to Fortinet devices. I deeply and sincerely appreciate his contribution.

And here's the actual question: will the firmware for FortiWifi 50E-2R work on FortiWifi 50E? The difference between the two devices, if I understand correctly, is that the former has two radios, AC and N (hence, 2R in the designation) and the latter, only one, N. If not, will there be firmware for FortiWifi 50E in the foreseeable future?

Thanks.

Unfortunately, the firmwares for FortiWiFi 50E-2R doesn't work on 50E (not -2R).
The individual initramfs image is required for the installation on 50E, but there is no compatibility with the image of 50E-2R.

We also talked about FWF-50E on the PR for adding support of additional FG-5xE/FWF-5xE, but nobody had 50E and I postponed adding support for it.

FWF-50E is not distributed in Japan, so I currently have no plans to add support for it.

If someone were to obtain one for you (or for another member of the development team, if that's easier logistically), would you consider a change of plan?

I don't know. Most of the devices in this series that are available in Japan have already been added, so I don't have much motivation to add more...

Thank you regardless! You are already involved in a big piece of work, and I apologize for trying to heap some more onto you.

Since I last posted in this thread, I actually installed OpenWrt onto a FWF-50E-2R unit in addition to an FG-50E I reflashed earlier. Everything works great, so thank you again!

One more question, if you don't mind... Right now, if I am reading the ToH correctly, firmware for FG-50E is the only one that's in release; firmware for other FG and FWF devices is in snapshots. Do you expect snapshots to eventually become releases? If so, any ideas as to when it might happen?

If the device is in snapshot it'll automatically be available in the next stable release when it's branched, see https://openwrt.org/about/history#branch_logic. The latest update is that the branching will happen in the next 2 months if everything goes to plan, see http://lists.openwrt.org/pipermail/openwrt-devel/2024-August/043087.html

Perfect! Thank you! And a separate thank-you for the links. I always wondered how snapshots become releases, but for a variety of reasons never asked...
