Flashing stock WRT3200ACM firmware fails with TTL [SOLVED]

I'm having some weird issues with my WRT3200ACM, which I bought in 2016. Long story short, I'm trying to flash the stock firmware onto both partitions using a TTL serial cable.

When I try to do so, I don't get any errors when writing to the nand partitions, but when I boot up, I get stuck in a loop and am unable to access the web GUI. I have tried several firmware versions, all the same exact result.

Strangely, when I flash openWRT firmware onto the router, it DOES work fine, and I am able to access the web gui no problem right away, so I'm assuming Uboot is not the problem. It's only the stock linksys firmware for some reason. I also tried using SSH into OpenWRT to flash the firmware, with the same exact problem and outputs.

I'll paste all the Putty outputs below. As you can see in the 2nd code box (linksys firmware booting), at the end it just keeps looping "sending discover" whatever that means.

A couple possible notable lines / errors.

  • "Error occurred at line 25" .
  • "Bad block table found at page"... shows up in a couple places
  • "Got a TERM signal, will terminate."
  • "Warning! nfqrecv encountered errors when doing recv(): Interrupted system call"

Any ideas?

iirc, OEM wants to call home on first startup, this isn't as simple as not being able to get out the door; i.e. MAC in play

I've solved it!

Turns out the problem was a bit unique to my situation. anomeome's post was helpful indirectly, because it made my try plugging the router into my local network on boot via one of the ethernet ports (not wan).

I then see in the serial output some extra stuff, including that it got assigned an IP of 192.168.1.88 . Then when I access that page from another device in the network, the GUI appears!

Then I realize, all my old settings were still there from before I even installed OpenWRT on it. Further, the router appears to have been set to bridge mode before I flashed OpenWRT the first time.

I believe this is why I was unable to access the router on 192.168.1.1. I thought it was not flashed properly, but instead the settings survived, including the one setting it to bridge mode.

So my solution: Just held the reset button on the back for 10 seconds lol. Now it is back to stock firmware and settings, and accessible on 192.168.1.1
