Firstboot and default config generation without reboot

Is there a way to clean out the config/packages installed without rebooting. The guide suggests

umount /overlay

I do not want to loose the session by rebooting.
Is there a script which could be run to regenerate the filesystem with default setting?

I want to start over without rebooting, no extroot

Then once you list the user-installed packages, you remove them, as well as the config files.
