Fileystem layout not explained anywhere

I've been using openwrt, and now Project lede for a few years now. I saw that the first release is being rolled out and wanted to upgrade my x86 router to it.

Now for the fun part: There are 5 images that I can use and it's not explained anywhere what the differences are. Not even OpenWRT explains it. I know what squashfs is. I know what ext4 is. But what is combined exactly for example? What the hell is rootfs? What are the consequences of picking one over the other? This isn't documented anywhere.

There are some information that I'd found that helped me understand the basics in my early attempts: Have a look at taggart's page. Those informations would be valuable in the Wiki.

EDIT: Anybody have an idea where in the Wiki it should be put?
